Lesson Three: Comparing/Contrasting Technology Essential Question: “How are the past and present different?” Sub Question: What are the similarities and differences of technology from the past to the present? Grade Level: Kindergarten Time Frame: 1 class period; 5 min to watch/discuss video, 15-20 min for activity **If the students do not finish, there will be time the following class period Standard: SS.K–2.H.1 Understand people construct knowledge of the past from multiple and various types of sources. Understand past, present, and future time in relation to historical events. Understand that primary sources such as artifacts, photographs, and documents are used to learn about the past. Objective: Students will be able to create a Venn diagram of pictures from the past and the present Materials: 1.Video: “Kids of Today vs. 1980’s Technology” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7v75QpvISUs 2.Pictures of technology 3.Venn diagrams- enough for each group (each Venn diagram will be on a big piece of construction paper) Vocabulary: Technology: Collection of knowledge used to create tools, develop skills, and collect materials Venn Diagram: Used to show similarities and differences **Any piece of technology that students do not know in the video, make sure to discuss. Go through and discuss pictures as well Anticipatory Set: We will review as a class what we have been learning about throughout the unit. Review the idea of the past and the present. The teacher will introduce the topic by asking students to list off pieces of technology. Then the teacher will show the YouTube video to the class. Procedures: 1. The teacher will review what they have been learning about 2. The teacher will introduce the topic in the anticipatory set 3. The teacher will show the class a variety of pictures of different technology (examples of the past and the present) The pictures will be discussed as a class 4. The students will be broken up into small groups and given a Venn diagram (the teacher will talk about what a Venn diagram is and then demonstrate the activity) 5. Each group will be given four pictures of technology and they have to place each piece into the past/present/or middle if we still use it today 6. The class will regroup as a class and discuss their diagrams (if there is not time, the teacher will walk around and make sure each group is on track) Modification **The groups could be divided based on skill level so that each student is comfortable participating **The groups could also be divided into heterogeneous groups so they can hear other students viewpoints Assessment/Evaluation: *The formative assessment for this lesson is that students will create a Venn diagram. Each group will be evaluated based on their participation in the activity and how well they arranged the pictures. This is an important assessment/strategy because it continues to show students understanding of how things change through time.
